Behavioral Self Control Training is a multi-faceted approach to changing or modifying the behaviors that compel us to take in various substances.

In short, it's a way to either abstain from specific substances or control our intake of them so that it is non-problematic. Behavioral Self Control teaches skills that can help you to control drinking-- for example--as part of the goal.

In most instances Behavioral Self Control Training has been used with alcoholism or problem drinking behavior but it can--according to the experts--also be used with other substance issues such as smoking.

While several varieties of the treatment method exist, most often the treatment is limited to the following treatment methodologies:

  • Self monitoring of drinking and notation of when the urge to drink takes place.
  • Setting of goals to control drinking and a self imposed limit of how much alcohol is too much alcohol or:
  • Rate control of alcohol
  • Learning drink refusal
  • Behavioral contracting and establishment of a consequences and reward method for adhering to the goals.
  • Self analytics of drinking and prevention.

According to Dr Michiel Bosman, "BSCT may not be the only required intervention, but it can be a very useful tool in the alcohol treatment arsenal, and one that helps the client to feel a little more in control of an out of control situation."
