For many, addiction recovery just seems like getting back to normal and resume life as it were before an addiction to drugs or alcohol took control and made a mess of things. It’s a starting point to begin seeking lifestyles that improve our mental and physical health, while also promoting positivity, clarity, and overall well-being.

Oftentimes, the term “holistic” becomes conflated with alternative or unorthodox treatments. Therefore, holistic treatments are often disregarded as legitimate when compared to the traditional approaches to treating different sicknesses. While traditional medicines and treatments seek to directly cure the symptoms of a problem, the holistic approach works to treat the underlying problem or the whole problem.
While the straightforward cure for your addiction may be to simply stop drinking or doing drugs, there is an underlying reason to why you turned to addiction in the first place. By incorporating the holistic approach to your addiction recovery, you can begin to treat some of the larger issues while simultaneously improving your physical and mental health. Here are a few holistic therapies you can try that can not only treat your addiction but also push you to live your best possible life.
Recovery Through Physical Fitness
There are several reasons why a person might succumb to addiction. For some, behaviors are sought after and repeated because they fill a certain need, such as adrenaline, clarity of mind, or happiness. But, what if a person could get these needs from behaviors that weren’t harmful?
For people seeking a rush of endorphins, activities such as swimming or jogging can provide a similar experience. Competitive sports provide adrenaline, and yoga can cleanse the mind as well as the body. In addition to providing these experiences, physical fitness also is known to boost confidence, self-image and physical health.
Recovery Through Mindfulness
Another reason many people turn to drugs and alcohol is as a form of escape from past troubles and trauma. Internalizing past hurt only seems to prolong the pain we experience. Over time, we begin to turn more and more to harmful substances until we can no longer function without them.
The holistic approach to handling this kind of dependency on drugs and alcohol would be to seek therapies that plumb the depths of the mind and confront the underlying issues in a healthy manner. Counseling is a good place to start openly discussing underlying issues and coming to terms with past struggles and who you are as a person. Music and art therapies allow individuals to become more mindful of themselves through their own creativity. Meditation is another way for you to practice mindfulness on an individual basis, helping you learn to embrace yourself and let go of the past.
All of these holistic approaches will help develop structures that will nurture personal health and growth. It should be noted that not all types of holistic treatments might work for you. It’s best to try the one that resonates with you the most and then to see how your recovery progresses.
