ADHD throughout History
Medical descriptions of excessive hyperactive, inattentive and impulsive children have existed for over 200 years, and it’s likely that there has been ADHD as long as there have been people. However, the current concept of ADHD is relatively new. ADHD was formally recognized by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 1968, under the name Hyperkinetic Impulse Disorder. This was reviewed in 1980 and the name was changed to Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and again in 1987 to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The disorder is increasingly recognized in adults as well as children.
