Anxiety is something that all people deal with on a day-to-day basis. Whether it is an upcoming test, an important interview, a first date or a public speaking event, there is nothing wrong with anxiety and nervousness when it presents in a mild manner. It becomes an issue when anxiety reaches the point it is physically or mentally disabling. This may seem farfetched, but in fact, it is not. Many case studies link severe anxiety with debilitating side effects.
When anxiety presents in a manner this severe, it is characterized as an anxiety disorder. The problem is that it is not easy to determine when normal day-to-day nervousness becomes a serious anxiety disorder. Anxiety comes in many different forms, such as panic attacks, social anxiety and various phobias, and the fine line between a disorder and “normal” is difficult to discern at the least. Considering the fact that it is extremely difficult to tell what is “normal” and what is not, any time your anxiety seems more severe than usual, it is recommended that you speak to a medical professional. Further, if you experience any of the following symptoms daily, you should also seek medical consultation.
- Excessive or Constant Worry
- Sleep Deprivation or Restlessness
- Irrational Fears
- Daily Muscle Tension for no Physical Reason
- Chronic Indigestion or Diarrhea
- Stage Fright
- Panic Attacks
- Flashbacks (Including PTSD)
- Obsessive Compulsive Behavior or Perfectionism
Again, it is important to note that occasionally experiencing any of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have an anxiety disorder. When these symptoms individually or in conjunction with one another present on a daily basis though, it may mean that you are struggling with anxiety, and it may even be a diagnosable anxiety disorder. At this point, it becomes imperative that you seek medical attention.
