Denine (Dina Maria) Smit was born in 1963 in South Africa and attended several schools where she was the head girl in the primary school, secondary school as well as in the hostel. She attained the degrees B.Iur, LLB, an advanced course in labor law (cum laude) LLM, (cum laude), LLD (Labour Law) at the University of the Free State in South Africa. She was an advocate for the State for 12 years, specializing in criminal law, and was one of the first female advocates practicing criminal law in the Free State, South Africa. Thereafter she was the legal adviser and IR specialist for South African Breweries and one of the first females occupying an executive position in the Central South African Region for 8 years, where she specialized in Industrial Relations and Human Resources. She went into private practice as an advocate, specializing in Labour Law until she took up a full-time teaching position at the University of the Free State 6 years ago. She has published many peer-reviewed articles and attended and presented several papers on labor law at many international and national conferences. Her book on vulnerable employees is due to be launched Jan 2017.
