Behavioral Self Control Training is a multi-faceted approach to changing or modifying the behaviors that compel us to take in various substances.

In short, it’s a way to either abstain from specific substances or control our intake of them so that it is non-problematic. Behavioral Self Control teaches skills that can help you to control drinking– for example–as part of the goal.

In most instances Behavioral Self Control Training has been used with alcoholism or problem drinking behavior but it can–according to the experts–also be used with other substance issues such as smoking.

While several varieties of the treatment method exist, most often the treatment is limited to the following treatment methodologies:

  • Self monitoring of drinking and notation of when the urge to drink takes place.
  • Setting of goals to control drinking and a self imposed limit of how much alcohol is too much alcohol or:
  • Rate control of alcohol
  • Learning drink refusal
  • Behavioral contracting and establishment of a consequences and reward method for adhering to the goals.
  • Self analytics of drinking and prevention.

According to Dr Michiel Bosman, “BSCT may not be the only required intervention, but it can be a very useful tool in the alcohol treatment arsenal, and one that helps the client to feel a little more in control of an out of control situation.”
